S.O.D. "Blue Velvet" by Bobby Vinton
9/26/2015 This cover released in 1963 is the most popular of the more than 15 versions recorded of the classic prom anthem. It shot to #1 where it stayed for three weeks and also charted in four other countries. Although Vinton didn't care for the track it became a part of his "Blue on Blue" album on which every song had the word blue in the title. It was written by Lee Morris and Bernie Wayne, an American composer who wrote many songs for musical acts as well as more than 1000 tunes for commercial jingles.
The first version was recorded by Tony Bennett as decided by Mitch Miller the head of Columbia Records' artists and repertoire department (A&R). During a stay at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Virginia, Wayne attended a party at the hotel. He had a hard time taking his eyes off a woman dressed in blue and the lyric was inspired. The song appeared on a few film soundtracks of which David Lynch's 1986 film "Blue Velvet" is probably the most well known. Lynch said that the song just fit the mood of the film and everything about it was right.
