8/16/2015 According to the music magazine, Cashbox, this was the highest debuting single on June 2, 1973 at #71 and by August 4 it was #1 on the Cashbox Top Singles chart. The Billboard Easy Listening chart had it also at #1, and it hit #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. They achieved five #2 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 with Madonna being the only only artist to top them in that category. The Carpenters also had eight #1 singles in four years.
It was written by Richard Carpenter and songwriter John Bettis with Carpenter admitting in a Japanese documentary that it was his favorite song out of all the songs he has written. The brother and sister duo had a 14 year reign it should be said from 1969-1983 as they ruled the soft rock/easy listening genres during that time. They had 15 #1 hits and produced 11 albums with sales topping 100 million units.
Their career ended in 1983 with Karen's death due to heart failure brought on by anorexia. The extensive news coverage surrounding the circumstances of her death increased public awareness of eating disorders.
