S.O.D. "Everyday I Write the Book" by Elvis Costello

8/1/2015      In an interview, Costello admitted that he wrote this song in 10 minutes and invested less emotionally to it than his other work during that period.  Though this was the case, it turned out to be the song that captured most of his fan base.  Written by Costello and released in 1983, it peaked at #33 on the Billboard Top 40 and at #28 on the UK Singles chart.  Stylus Magazine said that it's "fractured keyboards" may be the most successful use of the overdub cut-and-paste style.  Music journalist and critic, self-proclaimed "Dean of American Rock Critics" and 37 year editor for The Village Voice, Robert Christgau included this song among the Elvis Costello hits "you like so much you think you understand them".

Costello was born Declan Patrick MacManus in Paddington, England in 1954.  He is a vocalist, guitarist, bass guitarist, keyboardist and drummer.  Along with his many awards, in 2003 Costello and the Attractions were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Rolling Stone Magazine has ranked them at #80 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.  Costello sits on the Advisory Board of the Board of Directors of the Jazz Foundation of America and is always active in humanitarian projects.
