S.O.D. "Teach Your Children" by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young

7/25/2015     This 1970 folk rock release was written by Graham Nash when he was still with the Hollies but never recorded it with them.  Nash being a photographer and photograph collector explained in an interview that the inspiration for the tune came from a photograph by Diane Arbus of a boy with an angry expression, holding a toy grenade in Central Park.  The messages given to children about war and other issues hit him right then and there.

The Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia is featured on steel pedal guitar and in return for his services, CSNY taught the Dead how to harmonize on their upcoming albums, "Workingman's Dead" and "American Beauty".  The song peaked at #16 on the charts.
