S.O.D. "In My House" by Mary Jane Girls
5/14/2016 Not only was Rick James a musical mentor to this group, but also the force behind this dance-pop, post-disco, funk hit which James wrote and produced. It was a #1 hit on the U.S. Dance Club Play charts and made the top 10 on the R&B and Hot 100. In the Netherlands, New Zealand and Belgium it hit #6. On VH1's 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 80s program, it was ranked #52. The gals are sticking with their story that the song is about love, not sex.
It was in Los Angeles, 1979 when they got their start with Joanne McDuffie providing the lead vocals and the sisters Julia and Maxine Waters doing most of the background vocals due to the other three Mary Jane Girls having a limited vocal range. They were kind of an early take on the Spice Girls, with the other three being presented as a dominatrix, valley girl/cheerleader and a supermodel. Their name comes from the slang term for marijuana which James was a big fan of. The group released two albums and nine singles in all.
