4/11/2016 Remember the song "You Are My Sunshine?" Well that is the B-side for this folk rock/indie folk/alternative country song released in 2011 by this musical duo, active only from 2009–2014. Making up The Civil Wars are vocalist, pianist and concertinist (the instrument being a concertina), Joy Williams and vocalist/guitarist, John Paul White. Both collaborated on writing the tune which has to do with the community of Barton, Alabama, very close to Muscle Shoals which is White's hometown. At the 2012 Grammy's the song won them the Best Country Duo/Group Performance Award.
Of their 18 award nominations, they have been presented with six, including the ASCAP Vanguard Award in 2011. This is presented by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers and recognizes new and developing genres, helping to shape the future of music. Both musicians had significant musical careers before and after The Civil War's. In 2015, White did some work with Emmylou Harris, and you can hear Williams on the soundtrack from "12 Years A Slave" with musician Chris Cornell.
