S.O.D. "Stranglehold" by Ted Nugent

3/11/2015     Motor City Madman as he is sometimes referred to, hits hard and heavy with this 8:26 minute rocker containing the genres of hard rock, blues rock, psychedelic rock, and yes, even stoner rock.  Released in 1976, it is written by Nugent but he does not perform the lead vocals on the studio version except in the verse "sometimes you want to get higher."  The rest of the lead vocals are sung by Derek St. Holmes, vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the band.  Nugent admits that his bassist Rob Grange, was a co-writer but was not credited.  His baselines are truly unique in the tune.

Before going solo, Nugent was a member of the Amboy Dukes who composed the hit song "Journey to the Center of the Mind."  Nugent was born in Detroit, Michigan and moved to Palatine, Illinois as a teenager. He is noted for his strong conservative political views, advocacy of hunting and gun ownership rights, and a board member of the National Rifle Association.  On July 4, 2008 he played his 6,000th concert in Clarkston, Michigan.  Guitar World has ranked the "Stranglehold" guitar solo as the 31st Greatest Guitar Solo of All Time.
