S.O.D. "I Can't Stand The Rain" by Ann Peebles
3/3/2016 More than 20 versions of this soul/Memphis soul tune have been attempted with the most notable by Tina Turner in 1985 and pop/disco/dance group, Eruption in 1978. Peebles wrote the hit song along with her partner Don Bryant who she eventually married, and DJ Bernie Miller. She released it in 1973.
The song was inspired by Peebles blurting out the words "I can't stand the rain" one night when her, Bryant, and some friends were about to have a night on the town. When she saw Mother Nature ready to put a damper on things, the phrase came out.
You're getting the Peebles version here although Eruption had the most successful, charting in 17 countries and ranking at #1 in Belgium and Australia. Turner's cover is also worth a listen.
Peebles was active for approximately 15 years, stepping down from music due to a stroke in 2012. The song ended up as her biggest hit. In all she released 10 studio albums, 13 compilation albums and 24 singles. Eruption was active from 1974–1985, made up of musicians from Africa and the Caribbean.
