S.O.D. "Three Great Alabama Icons" by Drive-By Truckers

2/19/2016     Many of us will not remember or may not relate to two of these icons, but the case is different with Lynyrd Skynyrd's Ronnie Van Zant.  Ronnie was a vocalist, guitarist, drummer and pianist. He was with Skynyrd from 1964–1977, passing on to Music Heaven after a plane crash claimed his life at age 29.  You can visit his memorial in Lake Asbury, Florida near his hometown of Jacksonville.

As the head football coach for the University of Alabama, our 2nd icon, Paul "Bear" Bryant held the position for 25 years with a total of 13 conference championships and six national championships. He retired in 1982 and passed on in 1983.

George Wallace is the third icon who held the office of Governor of Alabama from 1963–1967.

The Drive-By Truckers got their start in Athens, Georgia in 1996 and are still making some nice fusion with their latest album, English Oceans being released in 2014.  They have many more popular tunes than this with their genres being alternative rock, alternative country and southern rock.
