S.O.D. "Children of the Grave" by Black Sabbath
10/8/2014
All four Heavy Metal Legends got in on this one-Ozzy, Tony, Bill and Geezer are usually credited together for writing the band's songs. Considered one of the most influential heavy metal band's of all time and being credited with actually birthing the genre-Time Magazine called their album Paranoid the birthplace of heavy metal. Vocalist Rob Halford of Judas Priest states: "Great music has a timeless ability. You can put on the first Black Sabbath album and it still sounds as fresh today as it did 30-odd years ago. To me, Sabbath are in the same league as the Beatles of Mozart".
Guitarist, Iommi and drummer, Ward had a band called Mythology in 1968 and looking for a heavier sound, joined forces with Osbourne and bassist, Butler. Their first band name was the Polka Tulk Blues Band, then much to Ozzy's objection, changed the name to Earth. After being mistaken more than a few times for another local band named Earth, they would be known as Black Sabbath. A nearby theater was showing a movie called Black Sabath starring Boris Karloff and the name stuck in Iommi's head. Shortly after this, Osbourne and Butler wrote the lyrics for a song named "Black Sabbath" that Halford also comments on: "Probably the most evil song ever written".
"Children of the Grave", a 1971 release has 3 versions. One you are used to hearing and the other two are on the deluxe Masters of Reality album, one with different lyrics and the other an instrumental. It is based on the same concept of much of their other music; anti-war themes, pacifism and civil disobedience.
MTV named them #1 on the Top Ten Heavy Metal Band's list and VH1 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock, gave them the #2 spot.
