S.O.D. "Mama Kin" by Aerosmith
10/7/15
Looking for the best-selling American hard rock band of all time? It's these guys with more then 150 million records sold worldwide. They also hold the record for the most album certifications of an American group with 25 Gold, 18 Platinum and 12 Multi-Platinum. Of their 21 Top 40 singles, 9 have gone to #1.
This 1973 release is Aerosmith's very first single and was written by lead vocalist, pianist and harmonics, Steven Tyler. It is also their first song that uses profanity. Back in the 90s, the band opened a music club in their hometown of Boston, MA called Mama Kin Music Hall which unfortunately is no longer in operation. On Tyler's arm there is a tattoo that reads "Ma' Kin". Guitarist Joe Perry jokes that they had to shorten the name because his arm is so skinny.
They have been heavy influences on too many rock bands to count including Motley Crue, Extreme, also from Boston, guitarist Slash who has stated a few times that Aerosmith is his favorite band, and according to Eddie VanHalen, they started out on the L.A. club scene playing Aerosmith songs.
The band is noted for making one of the most remarkable comebacks in music history during the late 80s and are one of the most consistent and longest touring bands in history. In 2001 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and among many other awards have received the mtvICON award. In their 45 years of rocking, they have had only 8 members which is unheard of in this business.
