He was born in Baltimore in 1944, spending most of his younger years there, then relocating with his family to Cleveland, Ohio at the age of 16.  There, he met long time bandmember and friend, Benjamin Orr.  Ocasek finished high school there, but dropped out of college to pursue his musical career. After being a member of several bands with Orr, they moved to Boston and founded The Cars in 1976.  In 1978 The Cars were voted Best New Artist in Rolling Stone’s Readers’ Poll.

The very first MTV Video Music Awards took place in 1984, with The Cars being awarded Video of the Year for “You Might Think.”  The group consisted of the same five members for their entire 12 year run.  During his tenure with the cars, he released his first solo album in 1982 and also developed a reputation as a record producer.  Among the numerous groups he produced for are Weezer and No Doubt.  In April 2018 The Cars were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and performed one last time.  Thank You Ric!!!!
