5/24/2017     Miss Vaughan unfortunately left us in 1990, having created a legacy that will have not only jazz singers, but any vocalist that has ever heard, instilled with some sort of inspiration.  Her range was of soprano to female baritone, with her ear, control, and versatility unmatched. There are endless praises regarding her abilities.  Many well-known artists cite Vaughan as having the most remarkable of the 20th century, believing her talents to be of an operatic status.

In his book, "Visions of Jazz (2000)," jazz critic, Gary Giddins referred to her as "the ageless voice of jazz."  He went on to write that a voice like Vaughan's comes along not once in a lifetime, but once in several lifetimes.

She also went by the names, "Sassy," "Sailor," and "The Divine One>' Though classified as a jazz vocalist, she considered herself an artist of many genres.  In 1989, the National Endowment for the Arts bestowed upon her their highest honor in jazz, the NEA Jazz Masters Award.  Do yourself a favor and listen.
