S.O.D. "If I Had a Hammer (The Hammer Song)" by The Weavers
11/22/2017 Written in 1949 by folk singer and social activist Pete Seeger, and Lee Hays, a folk-singer and songwriter who is also the baritone vocalist for The Weavers. Originally, it was written to support the Democratic Progressive party, active from 1948-1955. The Weavers, a folk quartet, released the first recorded version in 1950. Other artists followed up with their own take on the song, including Trini Lopez, Johnny Cash, and Peter, Paul and Mary, who had the most successful version in 1962, winning Grammys for Best Folk Recording and Best Performance by a Vocal Group.
