S.O.D. "Tenderness" by General Public

7/22/2016     A blend of 14 musicians including a horn section, combined to make the new wave  album"All the Rage," with this 1984 release being its biggest single.  It topped out at #27 on the Billboard Hot 100, also charting in Australia, Canada and the UK.  The tune also placed at #76 on a special list put together by Rolling Stone named The 100 Best Singles of 1984: Pop's Greatest Year.

The group's keyboard player, Mickey Billingham wrote the song that has to do with a man needing real tenderness to feel like a man.  Such a true statement although many men would not admit it.  Public media used the song in some movies, sporting events and a string of Target commercials as part of an instrumental.

General Public was formed in 1983 by Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger, the vocalists for the British new wave/ska/punk group The Beat. This was after The Beat broke up.  Active from 1984–1995 with a seven year hiatus mixed in, they released three studio albums and 10 singles.
