S.O.D. "Angel From Montgomery" by Bonnie Raitt
7/15/2015 John Prine wrote this country tune in 1971 and included it on his self titled album. Versions were performed by Carly Simon, Bonnie Koloc and John Denver. In 1974 the song received its deserved recognition with Bonnie Raitt's unique vocal ability added to her own version. Raitt stated in a 2000 interview that "Angel From Montgomery" has meant more to her fans and her musicality then any song she has composed or performed. When writing the tune, Prine had a vivid picture in his mind of a middle-aged woman standing over dish water with soap in her hands and wishing an angel would come and take her away from her life.
He chose Montgomery, Alabama as the setting due to Hank Williams having ties to that city and having influenced Prine during his musical career. The 2006 film "Broken Bridges" began as the Cherie Bennett/Jeff Gottesfeld screenplay "Angel From Montgomery" based in Montgomery Tennessee. The song is also a concert staple of Hank Williams' granddaughter Holly Williams.
Bonnie rate is on her 45th year of performing. She is rated #89 on Rolling Stones list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time and #50 on the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. In 2000 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
