S.O.D. "I Gotcha" by Joe Tex
6/14/2016
S.O.D. Ranked as the #6 song of 1972 by Billboard Magazine, this R&B energetic number started out as the B side to his single "A Mother's Prayer." As with many songs that become popular, the DJs sort of helped it along by simply flipping over the record and taking a chance. After writing it, Tex had planned to give the song to soul singer/songwriter, King James to record. With that never happening, Tex recorded it in the late 60s, releasing it in 1972.
Born Joseph Arrington Jr, in Rogers, Texas 1935, he was strictly a vocalist and active from 1955–1982. It was in this year that he died 5 days after a heart attack. Including this song, he had 4, million dollar selling singles, one entitled "Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman)."
In 1966 he converted to Islam and changed his name to Yusuf Hazziez, touring as a spiritual lecturer. He kept making music though, creating 36 singles between 1960–1978. "I Gotcha" can be heard in the 1992 Quentin Tarantino film "Reservoir Dogs."
