S.O.D. "Ride Captain Ride" by Blues Image
5/9/2015 Guitarist Mike Pinera and keyboardist Frank "Skip" Konte recall that the song pretty much wrote itself after they came up with the introduction. There was a Rhodes piano in the studio which had 73 keys, hence the first line; "73 men sailed up from the San Francisco Bay". The tune was later remixed as a psychedelic space version. Released in 1970, it is Blues Image's only Top 40 hit peaking at #4 in the U.S. and Canada. The band was only active from 1966–1970 and originated in Tampa Florida. They were responsible in 1968 for helping promoters form the most innovative music venue in South Florida called "Thee Image". It featured up-and-coming acts such as the Grateful Dead, Blood, Sweat and Tears, and Cream with Blues Image as the house band.
Only three albums were released by the band before they went their separate ways. "Ride Captain Ride" has been featured in many TV and film spots including The Legend of Ron Burgundy and as William Shatner's entrance song for his Comedy Central Roast.
