S.O.D. "Assasing" by Marillion

4/24/2014     Under the genres of pop rock and neo-progressive rock comes this unusual vocalized 1984 single with many instrumental changes.  Recorded at a length of 7:01 as a single, the album version is significantly edited coming in at just 3:39 minutes.  Written by most of the band, the lyrics pertain to the departure of original drummer and the band's cofounder, Mick Pointer.  In the song, the narrator is the assassin and many of the references are to verbal fighting, eg: "unsheath the blade within the voice".  The song presents itself with very interesting instrumentation and the vocal lines being sung in many different ways throughout.

Marillion originated in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England in 1979 and are still active today.  They are known as the most successful band to come out of the UK's 1980s neo-progressive rock scene, producing 17 studio albums with eight of them making the top 10  on the charts and with more than 15 million sold.  Their most successful years were between 1983–1994 and split nearly even between two lead vocalists.  The first being of the strange name Fish and then Steve Hogarth.  Marillion is also one of the first groups to tap into the power of keeping in touch with their fans via the Internet.
