S.O.D. "Pennsylvania Polka" by Frankie Yankovic

3/7/2016     Known as "America's Polka King," this musician has had an incredible life.  After learning the accordion which he began playing at age 9, he was making money as a musician around 4 to 6 years later playing at neighborhood events.  He has recorded more than 200 compositions and has sold in excess of 30 million records.

During his time in the United States Army, Yankovic  received a Purple Heart for injuries suffered at the Battle of the Bulge and nearly had to have his hands and feet amputated due to frostbite and gangrene. He refused this treatment and eventually won the long, painful battle.  He was then assigned to the special services to entertain the troops. At one point he played for General George Patton. While in the service, he released many records during his time on leave and before going to battle.

Yankovic was the winner of the first Grammy Award in the polka category.  He earned his title of "Americas Polka King" in 1948 when he won the battle of the bands in Milwaukee.  This song is featured in the movie "Groundhog Day" which takes place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.  He is of no relation to Weird Al, but has performed with him.
