4/2/2016 OK we will go with this 1941 version recorded by Horne that would eventually be inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and was ranked #30 on AFIs (American Film Institute) list of the 100 greatest songs in cinema in the past 100 years. Ethel Waters was the very first singer who performed the song which was in 1933 at the famous Cotton Club in Harlem, NY. Her version was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame as well as being placed in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress.
Many others were released, including by artists such as Duke Ellington, Judy Garland, Ringo Starr and a popular version by Billie Holiday. The tune was written in 1933 by composer Harold Arlen and lyricist Ted Kohler. It tells the story of a relationship gone kind of sour with "stormy weather" used as a comparison to the woman's bluesy feelings.
