S.O.D. "A Rainy Night in Soho" by The Pogues
2/10/2016
Pretty cool name for an album: "Poguetry in Motion" which this song was released from in 1991. Written by front man Shane MacGowan and produced by Elvis Costello, the only part of the song they differed on was which horn to use. They both ended up getting their preference with MacGowan's taste for a cornet being used for all versions except the Canadian shipments of the EP. For these, an oboe filled in, using Costello's suggestion. There are said to be just under 15 versions of the Celtic Rock song, showing up on different albums and bootlegs.
The Pogues started out in London in 1982 and are still playing their mixture of Celtic rock, folk rock, Celtic punk and folk punk. The group hasn't been doing much since 2014 when they played a UK Christmas tour. It's easy to remember them however by a saying that you here quite often: In 1982 there original name was Pogue Mahone which is an Irish slang of "kiss my arse."
