S.O.D. "Under the Influence" by Vanity
3/1/2016 Singer-songwriter, actress, model and dancer, active from 1977-1997, passed on to Music Heaven on February 15, 2016 at only 57 years old. In 1980 during her modeling career, she met Prince at the American Music Awards. Prince actually said he saw his female reflection when looking at her and renamed her Vanity. Up until then she simply went by her birth name Denise Matthews.
Upon Prince's request, she joined the all girl group Vanity 6. She went solo after one album with the group and released a couple albums which from her 2nd, "Skin On Skin," came her biggest hit "Under the Influence."
In 1994 she nearly passed away from kidney failure due to her crack cocaine use. She said that while she was on life-support Jesus came to her and told her he would save her if she gave up her life in show business and the name Vanity. She announced after her recovery, she was devoting the rest of her life to Christ and proceeded to speak at churches around the world. Her autobiography is entitled "Blame It On Vanity: Hollywood, Hell and Heaven." This is a 1986 release that ranked at #6 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart.
