S.O.D. "Twisted" by Annie Ross
11/7/2015 Two versions of this satire were released by Ross, and has to do with the protagonist's look at psychoanalysis. The first was in 1952 with the lyrics written by Ross and sung as a jazz solo with a tenor saxophone. This version helped Ross to win the New Star Award from Down Beat magazine. In 1960 she released the 2nd version with her jazz vocal partners Jon Hendricks and David Lambert.h
Bette Midler covered the song as did Joni Mitchell featuring Cheech Chong and another version by The New Journeyman before they became The Mamas & the Papas. Mitchell commented stating that she thought she deserved to sing the song after going through so much analysis.
She was born in Britain in 1930 and is in her 63rd year of singing and acting. She has had her share rough spots including with drug addiction but got back on top after kicking the habit. 38 albums and many awards are to her credit.. The 1997 Woody Allen film, Deconstructing Harry uses the original recording of "Twisted" as the introduction. A one woman play opened in London, 2006 called "Twisted: The Annie Ross Story" and a film documentary as well was made entitled "No One But Me".
