S.O.D. "Let's Go Fly a Kite" by Robert and Richard Sherman

    10/9/14

So now there are two movies to watch, "Mary Poppins" and "Saving Mr Banks".  Both are certainly worth seeing and the latter has quite an intriguing story behind it.  Al Sherman, father of Richard & Robert, inspired the tune as he was not only a popular songwriter, but in his spare time made kites for the neighborhood children.

The father in the film, played by David Tomlinson, mends his children's kite which is supposed to symbolize the mending of his family.  In the film "Saving Mr Banks", the performances are outstanding all around, especially Colin Farrell as Mr Banks and Emma Thompson as P.L. Travers.

Walt Disney at the time had two daughters in college and their sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta's symbol was a kite.  Some believe this was the reason for the song.  Lots of kite references in the mix.

The Sherman Brothers wrote songs for other Disney films including "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", "Over Here!"  and the "Winnie the Pooh".  All together they wrote more then 120 tunes.
