S.O.D. "Give Me One Reason" by Tracy Chapman

10/13/2015     "Give me one reason to stay here, and I'll turn right back around".  She just wants her boyfriend to stay with her is basically what the song's about.  Released in 1996, it made the Billboard Hot 100 Year-end chart at #6 and ranked on the Billboard Adult at #1 during the year.  It also reached #! in Canada.  The tune remains Chapman's biggest hit to date and is under the genres of roots rock and blues rock.  Chapman wrote the tune and in 1989 performed the song on on Saturday Night Live 6 years before it was released.  It was nominated for Record of the Year and Chapman took home a Grammy for Best Rock Song.  Her debut album, "Tracy Chapman" won 3 Grammys and Album of the Year.

At age 8 she began composing music using a ukulele her mother bought her when she was 3.  She attended Tufts University in Massachusetts and would play and sing in the outdoor courtyards.  Brian Koppelman, a fellow student, knew she was special and got his father involved who was the head of SBK Publishing.  He also helped her sign a contract with Elektra Records.  Chapman remembers part of her inspiration to play guitar was from watching the television show, "Hee Haw".
